Alcee Hastings doesn't understand politics

The Sun-Sentinel's Politics blog provides us with a view of what goes on inside his shiny little head with this nugget:

Look at the public opinion polls around the middle of July, says U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar.

Those numbers will determine whether Barack Obama will make Hillary Clinton his running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket.

He said if Obama's doing well in July, he'll figure he doesn't need Clinton. If he's not doing too well, Hastings says he'll figure he needs her.

Hastings even has specific numbers to attach to his prediction.

"If he's 8 to 10 points ahead of [John] McCain, Hillary Clinton is not his running mate. If he's 6 or under [ahead of McCain] Hillary Clinton's his running mate. End of story," Hastings said in an interview with reporters and editorial writers at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

As the paper points out, if he's 7 points ahead there's no advice. But more than that, the idea as to why he thinks Hillary would somehow be the saving grace is incredible. Maybe it's because he was a National Campaign Co-Chair for her. Perhaps, it's because Hasting's doesn't understand the word "change" anymore. Can someone tell me how/why having Hillary [and Bill] back in The White House would constitute that. Obama is seen as a transcendental figure, why in the world invite the "evil, terrible" ghosts of the 90's that most Americans don't want to have to deal with.

There are plenty of pretty good VP choices, why hurt yourself with them.
